Carat is the unit of weight by which diamonds are measured; it is equal to 0.2grams. The word "carat" comes from the ancient method of using tiny carob seeds as counterweight on scales. As diamonds are not typically found in single, large sizes, the larger the stone the more valuable it becomes. Diamonds of less than 1ct will also be referred to by "points" or as "pointers". There are 100 points in a 1ct stone therefore a 0.25ct diamond could also be called a 25 pointer or a 25 point diamond and a half carat diamond could also be referred to as a 50 pointer. |
